Jesus, Our Perfect Savior

Literally having not to do that All right. Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and emotion this morning We're at Hebrews chapter 2 the last half of the chapter We're going to continue talking about the excellencies of Jesus Compared to angels. So let's go ahead and have some coffee. We'll pray and get into God's Word Coffee cold. Nope. Okay Okay, all right, do you want to pray do you want me to pray wait Joshua oh But I know why you drink coffee mom doesn't All right, so we're in the book of Hebrews, which is all the way way back.
Oh, that's a good question. You weren't here for the introduction. The book of Hebrews is one of my favorite books of the entire Bible. And the book of Hebrews explains how it explains everything in the. Old Testament, especially in the book of Moses and how it ties to. One more page. It's a book of Hebrews explains the Old Testament. So we're at Hebrews chapter 2 Verses 10 through 18 10 through 18.
Would you like to pray or would you like me to pray? I Okay, Lord, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your word. And Father, we pray that as we read your word, your Holy Spirit would teach us. Lord, we pray that as we hear from you, that you indeed would open our eyes, encourage our hearts, and let us follow after you. Lord, we're fickle people. It's so easy to forget who you are and who we serve and what the truth is. So please help remind us this morning in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. Here we go. Hebrews chapter two, beginning at verse 10. You want to read 10 through 14 or 14 through 18? I think I might read 10 through 13, usually 14 to 15, it seems like. Yeah, go ahead.
For it was for it was fitting for for it was fitting for him for whom are all things and by whom all things are all things and bringing many sons to glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect, the sufferings. For both he who sacrifices and those who are being sacrificed are being sanctified. So for both he who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified, being sanctified, all of what? For which I reason he is not. For which reason?
And when you find my glasses for you to call them, but then say, I will declare your name to my brethren in the midst of the assembly. I will sing praise to you. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, here am I and the children whom God has given me. inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared in the same, that through death he might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For indeed he does not give aid to angels, but he does give aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore in all things he had to be made like his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself has suffered, being tempted. He is able to aid those who are tempted. All right, so that's kind of a difficult passage, so we need to ask ourselves, A, what is this about?
B, is the base for the summaries? And C, what are we called to do? All right. So, A, what is this about? What do you think? We will follow along. It's kind of easy. OK, kind of confusing. So let's go ahead and break things down. All right. So a what's this about?
So verse 10, for it was fitting for him. That's God. And so God, the father, for it was fitting for him. Stop doing that, OK? Yeah. For it was fitting of for the father, for whom are all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons to glory. So it's talking about the followers of Christ, right? It was fitting for God and all things are created and upheld for God in bringing many sons to glory. That's talking about God's people. To make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Who do you think that's talking about? Who do you think is the captain of their salvation? Um...
God? Well, this is this is yes. So this is Jesus. Right. So God, the father has is bringing sons to glory. And who's the leader of all the sons of glory? Jesus. Good. Well, he's the captain. Right. So he's the originator or the founder. So he's the archaic. And he's he's he's the what that's why they translate this captain. Right.
So he's he's the the one going forward. their salvation and how does how is he doing this well he's made perfect through sufferings and now verse 11 your favorite word it starts with for both he who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one Again, your favorite word.
For which reason he is not ashamed to call them brethren. So now this is talking about Jesus, right? So Jesus is the one who sanctifies and we are connected to him because he's sanctifying us. So he's not ashamed to call us. Did you notice what he's not ashamed to call? Call the sons of glory. The very last word of verse 11. Brethren, Jesus isn't afraid or ashamed to call us brothers.
Right. So we're of his family. Right. And so he says in Psalm 22, he's quoting Psalm 22 here. I would declare your name to my. To what? I don't know where I got it. Sometimes it's hard, right? This is the hard thing about the about section. You got to really pay attention. Verse 12, I will declare your name. So just above that, I will declare your name to my brethren. Now, Psalm 22 is the psalm of Jesus's suffering. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Right. All my bones are pulled out. Right. I can see I can count my bones or my joints are pulled out. Right. My flesh is like wax. I can count my bones. They've pierced my hands and my feet. That's the suffering servant. So I remember we did that the other day at family devotions. And so here this is another part of the messianic thing.
I will declare your name to my brethren Jesus is an ashamed to call those sons of glory his brethren in the midst of the assembly I will praise you and then he quotes Isaiah 8 here What does Jesus say I Will put my trust in him good and then the second part after that and again I Who am I and the children whom God has given me?
Right. So the children whom God has given me. So these sons of glory, remember what we saw that the father is bringing many sons of glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Well, Jesus is that one whom God has given these sons of glory to. This is coming straight out of Isaiah chapter eight. So now with that said, the father is giving these sons of glory because they're sanctified by Jesus and he's not ashamed of us. So then what does he say in verse 14?
In as much then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared in the same. What did he share? Himself. Well, he shared in flesh and blood. If he was going to be their brother, what did he need to be? Flesh and blood, right? Are you flesh and blood? Yes, right. So for Jesus to be able to call his brethren, what did he have to do? Be flesh and blood. Be flesh and blood. That's what it's talking about, right? So he likewise had to be the same. But then there's also one other thing that he has to share with us as our greater brother, as our prince of salvation. What does it say here? That through what? That through death. Through death. OK, keep going. Come on. Okay, so we'll go ahead and read verse 15 with it because that's actually one thought Okay, so so Jesus has come in flesh and blood He's shared with us in our nature.
And why did he have to do that? Yeah, but notice here, we were in slavery to death. So we were in bondage, right? Who in fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. And how did he do that? If he's the captain of our salvation, who did he destroy?
The devil, the one who has the power of death. So when Jesus died and specifically when he rose again from the dead. He defeated Satan and death itself, but we wouldn't be slaves to Satan and to death anymore. And so that's what that's what Jesus is. Our God is getting at here with who Jesus did.
Now, verse 16 starts with your favorite word again. Yeah, verse 16. Four, right? That's your favorite word of this, right? The point is this is logical, right? It flows. Four, four, four. Okay. So, for indeed he does not give aid to... Oh, this is interesting. Who does Jesus not help? No, look at verse 16. Do you ever think about that?
Jesus doesn't give aid to angels. He doesn't redeem angels. But he redeemed you. Yeah, but the point is, angels aren't aren't redeemed. Right. The fallen angels don't make choice. Yeah, but the falling. But the point is, salvation doesn't belong to angels. It only belongs to people, his brethren, the ones of flesh and blood. Right. So or indeed, he does not give aid to angels. Right. So Jesus is greater than the angels and he doesn't even redeem the angels.
But he does give aid or help to who? For 16, the second half. to the seed of Abraham. Yeah, he does give help. What's the seed of Abraham? Well, to the children of Abraham. Right. But we know that those who are truly the children of Abraham are those who believe in Jesus who have faith.
OK, so since all this is true, Jesus is the captain of our salvation. He's not ashamed to call us brethren. He came in flesh and blood so that he's able to defeat Satan and release us from bondage. Right. And who are those he's he's doing this for, for the seed of Abraham. Therefore, Therefore, yeah, in verse 17, therefore, what's the conclusion of all this? All things he had to be made like his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the things pertaining to God to make prohibition, propitiation, propitiation for the sins of the people. All right. So. Jesus had to be made like his brethren. Why? because he had to be able to be the perfect high priest.
He had to be able to stand before God with the suffering he endured in his own body and it actually be an acceptable sacrifice. So God and us were enemies? Jesus makes a sacrifice. Now, God is no longer enemies. He actually he's our heavenly father. Right. So there's there's no more enmity between us and him. There's no more. There's no more war. There's no more. There's no more tension.
Right. If we're in Jesus and he's our high priest. He calls us brothers and the father smiles upon us. So. Or in that he himself has suffered being tempted. He is able to aid those who are tempted. Right. So as our high priest now. What's Jesus doing? What's that mean to he's able to aid those? Oh, um. What's the word aid mean? Help. Help. Right.
Jesus is able to help us when we're tempted. Because did he endure all the temptations? Yeah, so he's able to help us. So, OK, we've worked through this is a really hard passage, right? The Book of Hebrews is very logically tied together tightly. What's this whole section about? I think it's Jesus come to us, save us. Okay, all right. So Jesus coming to earth, flesh and blood, was he just an angel? No. Yeah, he didn't redeem the angels and he's greater than the angels. He's bringing many sons to glory. He's not ashamed to call us brothers. He's our high priest in heaven.
So that's what this whole thing's about. Good job, ma'am. So what do you think? That's hard. What would you underline as the best verse to summarize this? Probably 10 through 18. And through 18, you sound like Daniel, all of it. But I understand because I have a captain of their salvation, perfect through sufferings underlined. I have part of 14 and all of 15 underlined, and I have 17 underlined. Well, that's the previous up here, right? But yeah, so I have a bunch underlined, too.
But I think if I had to underline anything, I would underline that through death, he might destroy him who had power of death. That is the devil, or at least those through fear, who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Therefore, verse 17, in all things, he had to be made like his brethren, that he might be merciful, a merciful and faithful high priest in the things pertaining to God. Think that's those are the parts that I would your line is what's this about?
Okay. Whoo. That was a lot What are you called to do what's the point of all this how's how's it change your life? How does it show you Jesus? We don't need to feel got to be a Jesus s I Big old tyrant, or somebody way up there that we can't talk to because he's way up there. Somebody like that. Or somebody that doesn't interact in any way with us. Yeah, right. Is he ashamed to call us his brethren? Are you ashamed to call Daniel your brother? But Does Jesus know we're sinners? Is Jesus surprised that we're that we screw up? What is Jesus surprised that we sin and screw up and mess up sometimes?
Yeah No. Right. That's how that's why he had to become flesh. But he makes propitiation for us. Right. That's that's his joy as the high priest laying down his life as an eternal sacrifice for us. And so for me, it's it's one of those things where it's comforting to know that I don't need to be ashamed of my sin. I need to turn from it with grief and hatred of that sin. Right. Understanding the sinfulness of that sin and endeavoring after new obedience. Right. But I don't need to try to hide it from God.
Because he sees it through Christ. And Jesus is able to help us to put those sins to death. Incrementally, more and more little bits of whole life. And so we look to Jesus. I think that's that's the helpful thing here. I'm getting gray hairs in your beard. I'm getting gray hairs in my beard. OK, with that, you can go ahead and pray.

Please help us to understand that we can ask things and we can talk to you and we don't need to be scared that he won't listen to us or he doesn't Interact with our lives at all in Jesus name. Amen.
