A New Covenant Fulfilled

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're at Hebrews chapter 8 verses 7 through 13. We're going to be talking about the Old Covenant versus the New Covenant. How Jesus ties into that and what God has done. Let's go ahead and have some coffee. We'll get into God's Word. We'll grow in our love for the Lord together. Let's pray.
Father, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your Word. Thank you for the blessing of your Holy Spirit. Lord, what we read today is a fulfillment of prophecy. Lord, it is an amazing gift to have your word in our hands in a language we can understand, access to the divine oracles. Lord, we are the inheritors of an amazing blessing. So Father, we pray that your Holy Spirit would please work with our hearts that you would teach us what we should know and how we should live in Jesus' name. Amen. Alright, so here we go. We are at Hebrews chapter 8, verses 7 through 13. For in that first covenant, being faultless, then had no place would have been sought for a second.
Because finding fault with them, he says, Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant.
And I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God and they will be my people. None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I shall be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." In that he says a new covenant He has made the first obsolete.
Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Well, we need to ask ourselves, A. What is this about? B. What's the best verse to summarize this? And C. What are we called to do in response to this? Well, last time you and I got together, we talked with Dan Dan about Jesus being a better high priest. Jesus having a ministry in heaven and that everything on earth was just a type and a shadow of who and what Jesus is and this is a better covenant.
Because see there was something insufficient or weak in that old covenant. It was never able to actually make anyone perfect. It was never designed, intended by just the signs and the types to be the fullness of it. No, it was meant to be a snapshot, a picture, a type, a shadow of what was meant to be. And what was meant to be was Jesus' priesthood and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the heart of God's people.
So see, there needed to be a new covenant, right? If the old covenant was fine, if Moses and the tabernacle and all of that was fine, if that was as good as it was ever going to get, then why did Jesus have to come? Everybody says, no, it wasn't meant for that. You can't say that first covenant was faultless is what he says in verse 7. But he says no, Jeremiah pointed out in Jeremiah 31, 31-34 that there would be a new covenant, a better covenant. And the promises contained in that better covenant are amazing. Did you notice what it said?
For this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, said the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write them on their hearts. This just has echoes of Deuteronomy 6, 4 through 9. And I will be their God and they shall be my people. He's talking about this amazing loyalty to Him that He won't let them go and they won't be snatched out of His hand. That His word is going to be with them.
None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, Know the Lord." This isn't saying that there's not going to be any teachers, but there's going to be an amazing abundance of access to the divine oracles, to the Word of God. People are going to have the Word, and they're going to be able to teach each other the Word. And it's not going to be this special cast of priests, but they would be a nation, a royal priesthood. And so he says to them, that none shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, Know the Lord. Why? For all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest. Right?
This is one of the big things of the Protestant Reformation. As we say, we want the scripture in the vulgar tongue. The sola scriptura, in the language of the people. We want the scriptures. in the normal language that we're able to understand. Get it out of the Greek. Get it out of the Hebrew. Move past the vulgate Latin that was only known by the priests. Give us God's Word. Take us like the people in Nehemiah when they said to Ezra, bring out the book. We want the book. We want to hear God's Word.
And it's not so shrouded in mystery that somehow somebody has to layer things for us. But the things that need to be clearly understood for salvation are perspicuitous. They're clearly able to be seen. That's not saying that everything in the Bible is equally clear. We've talked about that already multiple times as we've gone through coffee and devotions. But those are those things that need that are needed to show us a new covenant about Jesus are clearly known. And we're able to find out about salvation because the next thing, right, there's there's some there's things that are amazingly clear in scripture.
Notice what he says. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more. gospel will be that clear in the new covenant that when Jesus says this is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you for the remission of your sins if you are in Christ and the Holy Spirit is in you you know you know what that means you know that the omniscient God who knows everything purposefully doesn't think about your sin that though all of our righteous deeds are as filthy rags and though the wages of sin is death God loved us while we were yet sinners, that Christ would die for us. And so we don't have to hide in shame about our sin because God knows about it. And in this new covenant, He sent His Son to die for us. we might inherit his righteousness and become the righteousness of God. See, this is the beauty of this new covenant. In verse 13, in that he says, a new covenant.
He has made the first, becoming old or obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete is growing old, is ready to vanish away. Right as a new covenant goes more and more into its fullness, this is what God is saying here, you don't have a need. for a priest and a sacrifice on earth. No, your sacrifice is in heaven. Once for all the Lamb who was slain, who is worshipped by the angels, ministering in a tabernacle made not by human hands but by God in heaven.
And there he makes intercession always for us because he is living. has a better covenant, better in every way, with better promises and a better ministry. Indeed, he is the surety of a better covenant. This is the age of this new covenant in Jesus's blood. This is the hope we have. So what's the best verse to summarize this? Well, I've got in my Bible double underlined verse 12 and 13. That's what I got underlined in my Bible. Maybe you underline something else. What are we called to do though? See, what are we called to do?
Trust in Jesus Christ. Rest in Him. It's in Jesus. that even though we have unrighteousness, if we confess our unrighteousness, He is faithful and He is righteous to cleanse us, forgive us of our sins and cleanse us of all of our unrighteousness. He remembers your sin no more, Christian. He buries it beneath the deepest of the ocean. He removes it away from you as far as the east is from the west. Why?
Because Jesus' work is finished. And so trust in Jesus. Trust in the high priest of the new covenant who shed his blood for you. Cling on to that hope. Know your God. Have great joy because he's merciful to you. Let's pray. God, what an amazing blessing it is that we get to come to you, our merciful, gracious, loving God. Lord, we thank you that we live in an era of even better revelation, better gifts, better covenant. Lord, we thank you. We thank you for Jesus Christ. And Lord, we pray that you would please let us trust in you and love you all of our lives. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Oh, may you trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
