Victory Through Obedience

Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning. We're at numbers chapter numbers Deuteronomy chapter 2 verses 26 through the end of the chapter We're going to look at the one of the Kings King Sihon. It's gonna be defeated in Sihon So we're gonna be talking about that and we're gonna have some coffee We're gonna pray and get into God's Word. I asked everybody today. I said, all right Are we ready to go you good? And she said She said, no, I'm not good. Oh, what type of father is raising you? All right, let's pray.
God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. Lord, we thank you that even though we are not good or there's none good, no, not one, not by ourselves, Lord, but you are good and you've given us your word and you have been working through your word by the power of your spirit to transform us. Lord, and so we thank you. We thank you for this opportunity to read your word. Please help us, Lord, to love you. And to walk in your ways in Jesus's name. Amen. All right, I'm going to have a look. Here we go again Deuteronomy chapter 2 verse 26 You want to read first or you want me to read first? Okay, good And I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Shihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, let me pass through your land. I will keep strictly to the road and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left. You shall sell me food for money that I may eat and give me water for money that I may drink. Only let me pass through.
You give me any chance to read or you want to read that too Okay, but shaihan king of heshban would not let us pass through where the lord your god hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate Obstinate that he might deliver him into your hands as it is this day. And the Lord said to me, see, I have begun to give Shihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land. Then Shihon and all of his people came out to fight against Jehovah's. and the Lord our God delivered him over us.
So we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. We took his cities at the time and we utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city. We left none remaining. We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves with the spoil of the cities which we took.
Is that where you want to stop? okay you give me like a few verses left okay that's fine uh from auror which is on the bank of the river arnon and from the city that is in the ravine as far as gilead there was no one sorry there is not one city too strong for us the lord our god delivered us to all nope delivered all to us only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon, anywhere along the river Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or wherever the Lord our God had forbidden us. All right, so we have three questions to ask. What are our three questions? A, what is this? B, what's the? And C. All right, so now that you've closed your Bible, what's this about?
Okay, so where did you read that God had hardened his heart? In verse 30, where does it say that? Oh wow, that he might deliver him into your hand as it is to say. I totally missed that part. Who do you think is talking here? Moses, right? And so he's kind of rehearsing what? What's he telling them? Yeah, he's telling the history of what had happened, right? Yeah, good. So he's kind of like, hey, this is what happened, right? He just talked about how in the last part of this chapter, in the first part of chapter two, he's talking about how they weren't allowed to go into the land of Esau and they weren't allowed to go into Lot's land, but God was going to start putting the fear of the Israelites in the people's hearts.
And now what happens? As soon as God tells them to do something, what happens? Yeah, they do it and do they lose? No, they win, right? They listen to God's commands. They believe him. They do what he says. And what happens? They win. Yeah, they win, right? There's prosperity, right? Because God is keeping his end of the deal, right? God's keeping his promises. Pretty neat, huh?
What do you think would be the best verse to summarize this? If you could only underline one verse, what would you underline? You underline verse 30? Okay. Hmm. I think I would underline, I would underline verse 35. We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves with the spoil of the cities, which we took, right? Cause I think this is actually like they actually conquered, but that doesn't have anything to do with King Heshbon. It doesn't actually mention him or Sihon or anything like that. So I dig verse 30 also.
You could convince me. Well, let's go to seek calling. What do you think you're called to do? How does this teach about the covenant? Where does this show you Jesus Christ? If we trust in God and do what he says, he'll make it go well. Oh, like Job! It always went well for Job. Well, no, but sometimes. Well, oh, oh, oh, so you mean like Jeremiah? I mean, Jeremiah was faithful to the Lord.
It went well for him, right? He was just put in the bottom of a cistern. They just tried to kill him. Oh, you mean like Isaiah, who was faithful to the Lord and they saw it in two? You mean it's going to go well for us just like it did for Peter, who was crucified upside down, testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ?
Oh, or like the Apostle John, it went so well for him, they tried to boil him alive. At least they got to see Jesus when they were done. At least they got to see Jesus. Well, yeah, it actually didn't work, and he ended up living, and then he died later on the island of Patmos.
So do you think that this is saying, right, if you follow God, everything's going to just be great in your life? No. No, right? Does the Lord have a purpose? Yeah, right. So, but specifically when the Lord says, hey, you got this work to do and I promise you it's going to go well. Can you take confidence in that? Did he say that if he's begun a good work in you, he's going to complete it until the day of perfection? Yeah. Right now, is that necessarily going to be in this life? No, right, we can trust that if he was good just like he was here, he'll continue to be good.
Right, so I don't want you to be surprised someday if somebody comes along with what's called health, wealth, and prosperity gospel. Oh, if you just do God's commandments, it's gonna go great for you. A lot of people get really messed up with that type of theology, right? But Paul says, no, no, no, no, no, that's not what it's like.
What it's like is that even though I may be persecuted, even though I may be hated, if I got Jesus, I got enough. And if God is on our side, who can be against us? Right, because you're right. Even if they try to kill John, what happens afterwards? Yeah, right, for me to live as Christ and to die is gain. Okay, so you're going to kill me. Guess what? I get Jesus. It's a win-win situation here, buddy. You think there's hope in that type of message? Oh, yeah. You want to pray? You want me to pray? I don't know. I'm not a mind reader. Oh, you'll pray.
