The Grain Offering

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This is where every day you and I, we get together, we have a little bit of coffee, we get into God's Word, and we grow in our love for the Lord together. And this year, 2023, Lord willing, we'll make it from Genesis through Leviticus. Well, I gotta tell you, this morning we actually are doing a redo. Because the kids and I recorded Leviticus chapter 2, and then I went back later to play it before I uploaded it, and No audio. So, you're just with me today. I didn't think I wanted to put the kids through doing it again, so they'll join with us tomorrow for coffee and devotion, but why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll get into God's word.
Lord, we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word. We pray that you would please bless us now as we read it, that it would be a blessing to our souls, that we would walk in your ways, that we would love you. Thank you so much for all you have done for us in Jesus' name. Amen. Alright, here we go. Leviticus chapter 2.
This is a grain offering. When anyone offers a grain offering to the Lord, his offering shall be a fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. He shall bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests, one of whom shall take it from his hand of fine flour and oil with the frankincense, and the priest shall burn it as a memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire. A sweet aroma to the Lord. The rest of the grain offering shall be Aaron's and his son's. It is most holy of the offerings to the Lord made by fire.
And if you bring as an offering a grain offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil. But if your offering is a grain offering baked in a pan, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil. You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it. It is a grain offering.
If your offering is a grain offering baked in a covered pan, so we've had baked in an oven, baked in a pan, now it's baked in a covered pan, it shall be of, again, fine flour. with, again, oil. So all of them. Fine flour, fine flour, fine flour, with oil. Different ways of making it, but all of it. Fine flour mixed with oil.
You shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the Lord. And when it is presented to the priest, he shall bring it to the altar. Then the priest shall take from the grain offering a memorial portion and burn it on the altar. It is an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord, and what is left of the grain offering shall be Aaron's and his son's. It is most holy of the offerings to the Lord made by fire."
So this grain offering, there's this portion of the flower that's going to be burned in the fire. No grain offering which you shall bring to the Lord shall be made with leaven." Again, again, and again, and again here. Fine flour mixed with oil. No leaven. This is flat bread. This is like pita bread.
No leaven to be found in it whatsoever. for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey in any offering to the Lord made by fire." And so people will say, well why? Why do you need to not have leaven? Why no honey? Honey here could mean actual honey like we think of it or like a syrup. And so you might think of unleavened pancakes with syrup, right? None of that stuff, right? Because it causes fermentation and death and none of that.
Only unleavened As for the offering of the first fruits, you shall offer them to the Lord, but they shall be burned on the altar for a sweet aroma. And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt." So the opposite of fermentation here, salt. That's preservation. You shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt." Right, if you were to come into a covenant relationship with a king, a magistrate, some type of official above you during this time, if you ate the salt of their meal, you were in covenant with them.
And so here this is this preservation, this everlasting covenant that was meant to be made from the Lord. If you offer a grain offering of your firstfruits to the Lord, you shall offer for the grain offering of your firstfruits green heads of grain roasted on the fire, grain beaten from full heads, and you shall put oil on it and lay frankincense on it. It is a grain offering, right? So when you're going out in the field and you see the wheat field, you go out there, sorry, my nose itches, you go out there and you find the green heads of grain, Get those off and those are what you're going to take to the Lord as a burnt offering. This is to say the Lord is the one who brings in the harvest. The Lord is the one who provides for his people. The Lord is the one who is their sustainer and giver and provider of life. Then the priest shall burn the memorial portion, part of its beaten grain, and part of its oil, with all the frankincense, as an offering made by fire to the Lord."
So what's this whole portion about? A, what's this about? This is the sacrifice of the grain offering. Leviticus 2 is the grain offering. What's the best verse in this? I think in my Bible, I would probably underline verse 8 and 9. Or maybe just verse 9. I think I might underline something like that.
This is a covenant meal. This is a covenant peace offering to God. This could be brought for Thanksgiving as well. This is meant to be the Israelites coming to God. It is a special offering that they would bring to him and say, thank you, Lord, for bringing the harvest, for being our God, for being our sovereign and our provider. I think we could do that today, too. We can bring the sacrifice of our praise.
We don't need to bake cakes for the Lord. It's not like God is hungry even at this time. He didn't need to eat these cakes, right? But this was meant to show. their thankfulness for all God had done for them and who God was and the covenant he had made with them. Do we not also have a place to praise and thank him?
Well, let's go ahead and pray now. Lord, we thank you for all you have done for us. We thank you that you have given us the bread of heaven, Jesus Christ. And Father, we pray that you would please let us know that you are the provider and sustainer of all life. and that you have kept your covenant with us, a perpetual covenant of salt.
