Tear Down Every Idol

Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning. We are at judges We're gonna be at chapter 6. There's a 28 through 35. We're gonna talk about Gideon Okay, you ready You wonder what what's gonna happen to Gideon? No, no, are you excited about today's coffee and devotions? No, sometimes that happens, doesn't it? That's okay. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. Are you excited for coffee? Well, you can't drink all of it. Can you give me my cup there?
I can't reach around you. Oh, you. Oh, don't don't be a coffee thief here. Don't do it. Oh, my Bible's going to fall and you're going to steal my coffee. Oh, it's the worst day ever. OK, let me have some. OK. Oh, thank you for getting my Bible. Oh. yeah it's all beat up isn't it yeah the the see how the back is all ripping off yeah daddy should probably go get that fixed huh yeah but that's cost quite a bit of money to do that so uh you know what i would rather spend money on hanging out with you yep so No. Okay. You ready to pray? Lord, thank you so much for this day. Please help us. Give us your spirit. Help us to understand your word and help us to live it out in Jesus name. Amen. It's actually a really fun story about Gideon. So let's go ahead and read. No, no more coffee.
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, there was the altar of Baal torn down. The wooden image that was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was being offered on the altar which had been built. So they said to one another, Who has done this thing? And when they had inquired and asked, they said, Gideon, the son of Joash, has done this thing. Then the men of the city said to Joash, Bring out your son that he may die, because he has torn down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the wooden image that was beside it.
But Joash said to all who stood against him, Would you plead for Baal? Would you save him? Let the one who would plead for him be put to death by mourning. If he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been torn down. Therefore on that day they called him Jerubbael, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he has torn down his altar.
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites, the people of the east, gathered together, and they crossed over and encamped in the valley of Jezreel. But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew the trumpet. What would that sound like? That's right, he blew the trumpet. That's a different book. He blew the trumpet, and all and the Abiezrites gathered behind him. And he sent messengers all throughout Manasseh, who also gathered behind him. He also sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they came up to meet him. So, we're gonna stop there. There's kind of a few different things here, aren't there? We need to ask ourselves, A, what is this? About. About. B, what's the? Best verse to summarize and see what are we called to do. All right. So what is this about?
Well, we have Gideon. Gideon was afraid before. Did you know that? Yeah, he was afraid of the of the Midianites. Well, Gideon is a man. He's he was an Ofra. He was the son of Joash. And and so he's he was hiding he was making his food and hiding because he was worried other people were gonna steal it And God told him in the previous section. He said you're gonna lead my people. He said who am I? I'm weak.
I can't do this and God showed up in a mighty powerful way And so Gideon does it but God tells him, you know what you need to do in your daddy's town There there are two idols there There's an altar to Baal. You need to break it up. And there's a wooden pole. It's an altar to, it's an idol to Asherah. And you need to cut it down and you need to make a sacrifice and burn it on the wood of that idol. And at night you did it. Now it's the morning time, and the men of the city arose in that morning.
There was the altar of Baal turned down, and the woman that would an image that was beside it cut down, and the second bull was being offered on the altar which had been built. So what did they say? Uh, who did it? Yeah, who did it? And what's the answer? Baal did it?
No, Gideon did it. Gideon did it. And so they talked to Gideon's daddy and they tell him, hey, bring out your son because he needs to die. Are they going to kill Gideon for it? But what's his daddy say? No. No, I'm not going to give you my son. If Bale's got a problem with my son, what should Bale do? Take him in the night. Yeah, let Baal take care of it. But can Baal take care of anything? No. Because is Baal real? No. That's his point. Right.
So then all of a sudden, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East, they gathered together because you know what they had been doing? They had been eating all of the gardens, all of the harvest, all of the food. And God had told Gideon that he was going to lead an army against them. And so what's Gideon do now that all the all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East come? What is Gideon do?
Do you remember? Yeah, that's right. He blows the trumpet, he calls together an army, doesn't he? Yeah. Well, we're going to find out later whether he actually follows through or not. Oh, you want me to get to that place? Well, I can't right now. Yep.
Well, so what did we learn about the story? What do you think you were called to do now that you've heard that part of the story? Do you think you're called to blow the trumpet, gather an army, go to war? No. No. No. So why is this story? Why is that part of the story matter to you then? Uh, I just want to hear that. You want to know what I was thinking? You know what I was thinking about?
Should we trust idols? No. Can they, can they help you? No. No. Right. They're just things. Remember how we were talking about the Alexa today? She's just a robot. She doesn't have a brain. Yeah, they don't. Yeah, sometimes they can. Sometimes they're called smart devices, but are they always smart? No. No. Can you trust in a chair? What? Chair don't even do anything. No, you just sit in them, right?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So sometimes they flip over. Yeah. And so no, no, no. These idols mean nothing. Yeah, but are there more gods than one? No, there's but one only, the living and true God. Can we trust him? Can we follow him? That's right. How do we know that God cares for us and loves us? Because it's in the Bible. Well, yeah, it's in the Bible.
But what did he do in history? What did he send? Oh, he sent his son to die on the cross for our sins. Yeah, he sent his son for us, didn't he? Yeah. So can we follow him? Yeah. You ready to pray? Sure. OK, let's pray. God, we pray that you would please let us trust in you. Forgive us for how often. Lord, we trust in riches, we trust in money, we trust in things, we trust in devices. Lord, we we think of other things as more security than you. Father, please forgive us. and let us trust in you only, the one true living God. Father, we pray that you would give us hearts to follow after you even today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Daddy. Yes. When you you when you pray you say to Lord and I say to God Yeah, okay.
