Sanctify the Firstborn

Well, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're at Numbers chapter 15, verses 19 through 23. We're going to talk about the firstborn, right? So the firstborn, right? You ready to have some coffee and we'll pray? Yeah. Do you want to have milk or coffee? Milk. Milk. There's your almond milk.
You can have that. Tay's going to have his coffee. No, one or the other. All right, that's enough. We don't we just need a little. We don't need to suck it all down. Are you ready to pray? That's a card somebody sent daddy. No, let's pray. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for the blessing it is to get to spend time with each other, reading your word. God, we pray that you would teach us, help us to understand, help us to live out your word in Jesus's name. Amen. Are you ready? Uh-oh, somebody's tired. All right, Deuteronomy chapter 15, beginning at verse 19.
All the firstborn males that come from your herd and your flock, you shall sanctify to the Lord your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. You and your household shall eat it before the Lord your God year by year in the place which the Lord chooses. But if there is a defect in it, if it is lame or blind or has any serious defect, you shall not sacrifice it to the Lord your God. You may eat it within your gates. The unclean and the clean person alike may eat it as if it were a gazelle or a deer. Only you shall not eat its blood. You shall pour it out on the ground like water. So we got three questions like water. So we got three questions. A, what is this about? And B, what is the best verse to summarize? And C, what are we called to do? Good. So what do you think this section was about?
So if we had a cow, if we were in ancient Israel, let's just stick with the cow for this example. Well, they wouldn't do it with a pig. Right. But let's say we have a cow and the cow has a calf, has a baby cow. The first baby cow, would we be allowed to work that one?
No, we would take it to the Lord. If we were an ancient Israelite, we would take it to the Lord, to the tabernacle, and it would be given up as an offering. So offering means give it up to the Lord. But you and your family would be allowed to eat it with the Levites. But the point was, who gave them who gave them the new calf? God did, right? It was God's.
And so whether it was a calf or a sheep or an ox, whatever it was, a horse, right? Any of those things. A horse? Why would you kill a horse? Because the horse is a clean animal. It has a cloven hoof and chews the cud. I think a horse chews the cud. I don't know. What if it's a person that had a dog on them? Would that be clean? Actually, no, a horse wouldn't be clean because it doesn't have a cloven hoof. It has a straight hoof. I don't know. I'm not good with that type of stuff.
But the point was, right, if God gave them certain animals that were clean, Then the first of them was God. So, if he did... Yeah, but the point is, where does every good and perfect gift come from? God, God, God, God, God. Yeah, from God, right? And so they were to recognize that all their lives.
No, no saying moo now. And so that animal, right? Doesn't work anything. What if the animal had like a defect? What if it like got a messed up ear or, or what if the cow like had a broken leg or something like that? Were they allowed to sacrifice that one? Nope. They weren't allowed to sacrifice it at the tabernacle, but they, but they still had to slaughter it at the house and make hamburgers at home.
And anybody was able to eat that. Right. But the point was is that, again, the whole point, what is this about? Is that. Yeah, God gives them everything. That's right. So best verse to summarize this would I would underline verse. No, you're being silly. I would underline verse 19. Right.
So all the firstborn males that come from your herd and your flock shall you shall sanctify to the Lord your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd nor share the firstborn of your flock. Right. So the firstborn is sanctified. Okay, not animal noises like this. Okay, let's do C, Colin. Ellie, what are you called to do? Respect the Lord. Okay, respect the Lord. Maybe we should have hearts of thankfulness. What would you be thankful for in your life? Cats. Dogs. And dogs. And running from the rain. And running from the rain, right?
There's lots of things to give thanks to the Lord for because everything that is good comes down from who? God. How did the rain come down? We'll talk about the water cycle some other time. But God is good. He gives us all sorts of amazing things like kittens and a big fluffy dog and even a family. Yeah, and Papas who give you treats, that's right, that's right Grandma say give me chocolate. Wow. You have good grandmas and Papas.
Are you ready to pray? Okay, let's pray God. We pray that you would please let us be thankful people that we would recognize that every good gift comes down from you, our Father in heaven. Please bless us today. Lord, please let us have more and more thankfulness for all you've given, especially Jesus Christ. In his name we pray. Amen.
We didn't talk about that. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son. He did? Yeah. And he gave us Jesus. That's how good he is. You did know that. Well, may the Lord bless you.
