Obey the Father’s Command

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at Jeremiah chapter 35. We're going to talk about the Rechabites. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Nope, still no? Okay. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your Word. And we pray, God, that you would please help us to understand your Word. Please teach us to listen. And we pray your Holy Spirit would take that head knowledge, bury it deep down in our hearts, and change us that we might believe, and that we might be able to also live, live according to your word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. All right, Jeremiah chapter 35. We'll just go paragraph by paragraph. So you want to start? Okay.
The Lord which came to Jeremiah, the Lord in the days of Jehoriachin, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, Go to the house of the Nechobites, speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord. into one of the chambers and give them wine to drink. All right, so the Lord's coming to Jeremiah, and what's he wanting Jeremiah to do? Go to the house of the records. And bring them into the house of the Lord.
Okay, Rechabites were this tribe spoken in 1 Chronicles and 2 Kings that had kind of interacted with the kings before. So, then I took Jehzaniah, the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, his brothers, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, above the chamber of Maaseah, the son of Shalom, the keeper of the door. Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine and cups, and I said to them, Drink wine.
Right, so what happens there? So they'll welcome Jeremiah's family? I think it's a different Jeremiah. Oh, different Jeremiah. I was like, I don't think Jeremiah was married. Okay, he brought them into the house of the Lord and said, here's my drink. Good, right.
But they said, we will drink no wine. For Jonah Dab, the son of Rehab, our father, commanded us, saying, You shall not drink no wine. You shall drink no wine. You shall drink no wine. You know your sons forever. You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor any of these.
But all your days you shall dwell in tents, that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners. Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, our father. the son of our father, and all that he charged us to drink, and all that he charged us to drink no wine all our days. We, our wives, our sons, our daughters, nor do we build ourselves houses to dwell in, nor do we have vineyard, field, or seed.
We have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and done according to all that Jehonadab of Jonadab, our father, commanded us. But it came to pass, when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up into the land, that we said, Come, let us go to Jerusalem, for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for the fear of the army of Assyria. So we dwell at Jerusalem. So what's our answer to Jeremiah bringing them into the house of the Lord and giving them wine?
Nope right there ancestor told them they weren't supposed to ever drink any wine. What else weren't they supposed to do? They're supposed to basically be know that yeah, but there are nomads great, so they're They're not supposed to have fields houses etc dwell in tents like their trades people or trade trade traders even more nomads cuz sub nomads like in Arabia some nomads actually like their fertile valleys.
So in the winter, they'll travel because it's still hot. They'll travel. But then when it becomes, no, when it's summer, they'll travel. In the winter, they'll stay and plant crops. Hmm. I didn't know that. Okay, well, interestingly, though, also, why did they go to Jerusalem, though? Because they were afraid of the Babylonians. They wanted strong army people. Good.
Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah, saying, Thus says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction to obey my words, says the Lord? The words of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed. For to this day they drink none, and obey their father's commandment.
But although I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, you did not obey. I have also sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them. Then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers. But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed me.
Surely the sons of Jonadab, the sons of Rechab, have performed the commandment of their father, which she commanded them. But this people has not obeyed me." So what's the Lord say there? They're more faithful to their father than they are God. Yeah, the Rechabites know how to obey their dad. But you won't obey me. Oh, in Proverbs 16, he said, Show thee the son of Jonadab. The son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them. But this people has not obeyed me. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like God's people won't obey him. Yeah.
The sons of Rechab are able to listen and obey their dad. But the Israelites, God tells them to do something. They don't do it. and the Rehobites. Well, yeah, so if the Rehobites are actually Israelites, right, so that's, but he's comparing the two groups, right, so that this is compare and contrast. All right, do you want to do verse 17 and 18? Sure.
Therefore does the Lord, God of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I will bring on Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the doom that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them, but they have not heard, and I have called to them, but they have not answered. And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you, therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before me forever. So, what's that last two paragraphs about there? He first, he basically just pronounces a blessing on the Achaobites because they obey the Va'a. Yeah, exactly. Good, good. All right, so you got this whole summary. What's this, what's this whole chapter about? The Achaobites. What about them?
They are tested and passed the test. Okay, tested and passed the test. I might summarize it like the Rechabites are blessed because they listen to the commandment of their father, whereas the Israelites are disobedient, and God's going to punish them for that. Is that fair? All right, good.
Notice a few times how God's name is used again and again. I was struck in verse 17. Therefore, thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel. Could have just said, thus says the Lord, but it's very specific. It's like, this is the great God, the God over the armies, the God who is the wonderful one over all of Israel, and they won't listen to him.
It's kind of funny. When you said that I was like, that kind of reminds me of Brave Wolf. You can't just say Grendel, you have to say God caused Grendel. Grendel the dark fiend. Yeah, all right, so what would you underline as the best verse to summarize this? I mean, verse 19 and verse You like verse 8? I think I like verse 14 through verse 16. 14, 15, and 16. I think that paragraph, especially verse 16, I think verse 16 kind of really brings together the summary, but you would need to know about the whole not drinking wine stuff before. All right, so This is really, I'm going to throw you the softball. Ready?
How does this apply to us? What are we called to do? How does this point us to Jesus Christ? I think how this applies to us, I think that this is just almost, not almost a proverb, whereas the Jehovites listened to the Father as they were commanded, they obeyed Him, and it went well for them. They were blessed by God. And so I think that could be a calling to us that we should receive commandment. Okay. Instruction. Okay. Normally it'll go well for you. Okay. So receive instruction will normally go well for you? Yeah, that's a good application from it.
I would want to probably take it for, because I like to tie it into Christ, is Christ perfectly obeyed His Father. The Israelites mess us up, and they would continue to mess us up, and mess us up, and mess us up. But Jesus Christ came and did everything that His Father told Him to do. And because of that perfect righteousness, and me being united to Christ, now I'm able to, though imperfectly, walk in God's ways. And so Christ is the one who they needed. And we need to be like Christ. And so that's where I would go. I would look to the perfect son, Jesus Christ. And then I would try to walk like him. Sound good? Yep. Ready to pray? Sure.
God, we thank you for sending us your perfect son, the one who never stumbled or failed in any commandment that you gave him, though he wrestled even with tears of blood. Lord, he ultimately said, not my will, but yours be done. God, we pray that indeed you would help us as we pray to you that your will would be done, that you would subdue our hearts, that you would so unite us to your son, Jesus, that we would abide in him and bear good fruit.
