Jesus, Our Eternal Testator

No wedding march singing and no more audio problems, hopefully. So we're at Hebrews chapter 9 verses 16 through 22. This is a, I think, somewhat of a little bit difficult passage, but a fun one. So let's have some coffee. We may need it. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. No coffee for you black again. It's the best stuff. All right Hebrews Maybe you should come over to the dark side Hebrews chapter 9 beginning at verse 16. Let's pray by the way Thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word Please help us to read it understand it live it. We need your help Lord in Jesus's name. Amen. All right You want to read? Sure, go for it For where there is a testament, there must also be of necessity the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives.
Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, He took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet, wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you. Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And according to the law, almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission. Okay, so we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b. What's the And c what are we called to do? All right. So what is this about? Um jesus Okay, how is it about jesus? Um, because jesus is the testator. Okay. So jesus is the testator. What is the testator? the person who makes the testament the covenant Okay, so the person who's makes a covenant, a testament, good.
So this would be similar to, so diatheke here is similar to like a will, right? And so if mommy and daddy have a will made, which we do, could somebody go to the bank with our will and say, oh, I'm the one who's the beneficiary of the will. And so I would like all of their money now.
Yeah, so it doesn't make any sense? No. Could a family member come and say, whoa, whoa, whoa, I got the will. I'm supposed to have these children and tell the police I have to take you out of our house? No. Why not? Yeah, right. So we're not dead. So so the right, the conditions for it haven't been met. Right. And in the. Ancient days, if there was to be a covenant and especially a covenant where somebody was ruling over another people, right, there had to be a conquering king and the death of of another. Right. And so.
Jesus, you said this about Jesus. How is this about Jesus? Okay Okay, he had to die for the Covenant to take effect right just like mommy and daddy would have to die for our will to take effect Right for that contract that covenant those those conditions to come into effect. So what was it like in the Old Testament? How was that one put into it? Yeah, the blood of bulls and goats and rams. Right. And so when Moses had read the law, God had given him everything in. And Moses took a branch of hyssop. And what did he do? He coughed and he coughed and he put it in the blood and sprinkled it on. Yeah. Sprinkle it just on the people.
Well, yeah, so on the altar and on the altar of incense and on the showbread so like all the stuff in the tabernacle Yeah, so the tip will the table of showbread not the bread itself. I don't think But right so it sprinkled it on everything including the Ark of the Covenant and and did you notice what it said? also on the books on the book itself. So on the Torah itself, on the, on the book of the covenant itself, right?
Because for the covenant to take effect, it needed to have the sprinkling of blood. Do you remember when God appears to Abraham and he had made a covenant with him and he has him cut the animals in half and Abraham goes to sleep and he sees the fire pot and the sensor go through the Between the two animals Yeah, yeah, so that's it's a theophany right it's a it's God appearing walking through and it's God saying that this covenant is set right, but If somebody was to break that covenant, then they're as good as dead themselves. And something's got to die to ratify the covenant. What ratified and set in place the new covenant? What ratified the new covenant?
Jesus. How do you know that? He died on the cross. Did he ever say anything like this? To let us know that that's what he was talking about? What do you think? Can you think of anything? So at the institution of the Lord's Supper, do you remember what he said about the cup they were about to drink?
Interestingly the blood of the new covenant for the remission of sins Jesus specifically uses the term covenant for that reason there He was going to ratify he was going to redeem He was going to initiate the new better covenant in his blood in his priesthood for his people What would you underline as the best verse for this section I Okay All right. Yeah, that's what I would do too. I've got a number of things in verse 16 underlined so What does this call you do?
Okay, who's him Okay, so trust in the in the sleepy Sandman I Okay, so the trust in Jesus right because Jesus is what Yeah, he's a testator right you Jesus Yeah, all right, but we can trust in him right because Jesus ratified the covenant in his own blood Jesus sealed the new covenant for us guaranteed it for us and If Jesus sealed it, can anybody break it? No, that's perfect. Done forever. It's a wonderful new covenant to be in. You ready to pray? Would you like to pray? I can if you don't want to. Well, it's your choice. I don't want to peer pressure you. Okay, i'll pray.
Yeah God, thank you so much for jesus christ And for the new covenant in his blood. Thank you that he was willing to die for us Lord, we thank you for giving us a great high priest With a better sacrifice and a better covenant than moses lord Please let us trust you.
