Hope in Him, Walk His Way

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're going to be wrapping up 1 John chapter 2 into chapter 3 verse 3, asking, how do we know that we are Jesus's? How do we know if we are in Him? Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray.
Father, we thank You so much for this day. We thank You for Your Word. And we pray that as we read Your Word, Your Holy Spirit would teach us. Lord, lead us into all truth and direct us in the paths we are to walk. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Here we go. 1 John 2, beginning at verse 28, through chapter 3, verse 3.
And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God. Therefore the world does not know us because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has yet sorry, "...and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be. But we know that when he is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure." well we need to ask ourselves a what's this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do well wait what this is about for verses 28 and 29 right is we have a confidence and a hope right we have a confidence because we know that he's coming again So we can abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before His coming, right? Because we're abiding in Him, we're resting in Him, we're hoping in Him, we're living out His ways. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him, has been begotten of Him. If you were a child of God, you walk in righteousness because God begets righteousness. And so how do we know that we are of Jesus? Well, practical ways, we look at our lives and we see, are we walking in righteousness? Are we keeping the Ten Commandments? Are we desiring the Ten Commandments? Are we desiring the things that God desires?
Is the Lord our God the only God? Do we have any other beside him? And so we got a problem. Are we bowing down to images? Are we worshiping them? Even, and here's a fun thing, right? Some people will say, well, I'm not actually worshiping the image. The image is just an aid in worship. What I'm really worshiping is the God beyond it. It's the same thing that ancient pagans said too, right? They didn't believe that Zeus was actually just the statue, but that the statue represented Zeus. But no, right? We don't bow down to, we don't offer Latria, we don't offer service, we don't offer worship, anything to idols. No, we go and we worship Him.
Are you taking the Lord's name in vain? Do you blaspheme God? Or do you hold His name as holy? Do you rest one day in seven? We believe that there's a Christian Lord's Day, there's a Christian Sabbath. From the resurrection of Christ until the end of the age, God has sanctified the first day of the week. that we worship Him, that we rest in Him, that we remember the finished work of Christ and Him being raised again from the dead. Do you honor your mother and father?
Do you preserve and promote people's things or do you steal? Do you let truth come out of your lips or do you lie? Do you bear false testimony? Do you keep pure in your heart, not lusting after women with your eyes or men with your eyes? Do you promote and preserve and cherish life? Or does your anger and your hatred and your bitterness pave your path? Do you submit to the Lord's hand and know His will? Or are you filled with covetousness, desiring other people's things and other people's lives?
Or do you walk in righteousness? This is a sign that you have been begotten of Christ. That's what verse 29 is talking about. So this is very bold. What manner of love God has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. He's poured out his spirit into your heart that cries out, Abba, Father. Therefore the world doesn't know us because it didn't know him, right? You're gonna be a little bit odd. You're gonna be weird. That's okay. That's okay.
Beloved, now we are children of God, and we don't know what we're going to be, but we know we're going to be like Christ. We know when he comes again, we know that he has similar qualities, but different, or similar attributes, but different qualities. We know Jesus was still able to be touched, and he still ate and stuff like that, but somehow he was a little bit different. We don't know exactly what that is, but we know that we will be like him.
And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Do you have this hope in Jesus? Notice it's not your righteousness that purifies you, but God gives you regeneration. He begets you. He makes you born again. And out of that born-again nature, you live a life of righteousness. It's not your righteousness that purifies you, but it's your faith in Christ the instrumentality of faith clinging to the object of faith, Jesus. And it's Jesus who purifies you, makes you as clean as snow, washes away your sin as white as wool.
He's the Lamb who was slain to take away the sins of the world. So we hope in Him, we trust in Him. So what's this about? How do we know we're the children of God? outward evidence in our heart, or in our lives, the outward evidence of our lives of righteous living, which shows an inward hope. In Jesus alone that purifies us. So what's the best verse to summarize this? I'd probably underline verse 29 and verse three. That's what I would underline in my Bible. Maybe you would underline something else. Will I see you calling? I think we've had a whole bunch of see calling all throughout this.
Hope in Jesus Christ and walk in his ways. Hope in him and walk in his ways. Let's pray. God, we pray that you would please teach us, lead our paths, let us walk in your ways. Sanctify us, Lord. You are good. Please pour out your Spirit even more into our hearts that we might abide in your Son and bear much good fruit in keeping with repentance. Lord, we thank you for who you are.
