Hope Beyond Judgment

Well, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. Last time we were at Jeremiah 32, we started Jeremiah's prayer, asking God, why in the world would you have me by this field? Look, the armies of Babylon are at the gate. Let's find out what happens. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. What a blessing it is to get to serve you. What a joy it is to get to read your word. We pray that your Holy Spirit would please help us to understand what is written here. Father, we pray that where it is applicable, you might shed light in our hearts to understand. In Jesus' name, Amen.
All right, Jeremiah chapter 32, beginning at verse 26, and we'll just work our way through the end of the chapter. So how about I start reading, and we'll just kind of paragraph, paragraph, paragraph. Sound good? Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for me?
Therefore, thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and he shall take it. And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods to provoke me to anger.
Because the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done only evil before me from their youth. For the children of Israel have provoked me only to anger with the work of their hands, says the Lord. For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and my fury from the day that they built it, even to this day. So I will remove it from before my face. Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and they have turned to me the back and not the face, though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction.
But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name to defile it. And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them. Nor did it come into my mind that they should do this abomination to cause Judah to sin. So what's that section about?
Israel provoking the Lord and Acting one way like Go in the temple before me sacrifices do like acting like she's fine and doing can and I can't Canaanite worship. Yeah, actually here. Now therefore, thus says the Lord, God of Israel, concerning this city, of which you say, it shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, by the sword, by famine, and by the pestilence. Behold, I will gather them out of the countries where I have driven them, in my anger, in my fury, and in great wrath, I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell. Did I miss something? No, you're right.
I will call them to dwell safely. They shall be my people, and I will bear their God. Then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, the God of them for the good of them and their children after them. and I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from doing them good, but I will put my fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from me. Yes, I will rejoice over them to do good, and I will surely plant them in this land with all my heart and with all my soul.

Men will buy fields for money, sign deeds and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin and the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south.
For I will cause their captives to return, says the Lord." Jeremiah goes, God, why'd you have me buy this field? And God answers and said, buddy, don't worry. They're going to come back. They're going to buy land again. They're going to sell land again. You're going to be okay. So why do you think God had Jeremiah buy this land? I think that's so much because Jeremiah was a farmer. What's that? I don't think Jeremiah was going to specifically use the land. So why'd God have him buy the land? He's the one who told him to do it. I think it was more symbolically. continuing with, he's not, he's saying like, there will be punishment.
But that's all it is. It's not complete annihilation. Yeah, right. He's still gonna keep his promises. Still gonna keep his promises. Yeah. He's not forsaking his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He's not throwing off his people completely. That's not what he's doing. Yeah, there's hope I'm hoping isn't it.

This is still, this whole language that like, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, and I will not turn away from doing them good, but I will put my fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from me. That is what He's done with us in adopting us as His children, pouring out His Holy Spirit in our hearts, the spirit of adoption that cries out, Abba, Father. He engrafts us into these promises. He's purchased us, sealed them by His Son Jesus, applied them by His Holy Spirit, and we have hope. It's good stuff, huh?
You ready to pray? Yep. You want to pray or you want me to? You pray. Okay. God, thank you so much for the blessing this, to know that you have not utterly forsaken your covenant, but quite the opposite, Lord, where Jeremiah was looking around him and seeing that things didn't look like they were going well. We could be depressed in the same way. looking around us thinking, how could anything good possibly come out of this?
But you are the sovereign Lord of everything living that has breath. So Father, we trust in you, that you are the one who does amazing and miraculous things. You are the King and the Lord of all. And so we trust in you. Father, we pray that you would please help us to live with hearts of gratitude, even looking beyond the here and now, current circumstance, and trusting in your everlasting promises.
