God’s Word Never Fails

Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning, we're going to find out what in the world does Caleb do with the city he's inherited. Do you remember who Caleb is? Nope. All right. Well, we'll talk about that in a moment. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll get into God's Word. It's hot. Please don't drink all of it. I gotta monitor the kid, he'll drink all my coffee, I'm not careful. That's good, that's good, that's good. All right, let's pray. God, thank you so much for this day, thank you for time that we get to spend in your word. Thank you for the joy of being able to spend time together and to learn from you. Please help us, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, amen. All right, Joshua chapter 15. Joshua, so just before Judges, so it's Joshua, then Judges. Joshua. Joshua chapter 15. Joshua chapter 15, beginning at verse 13. All right, so some background.
So the spies, 45 years before Daniel, the spies, Israel sent out 12 spies. I don't have 12 fingers, but 12 spies. Yeah, 12 spies and there were 12 that went, one from each tribe in Israel. 10 come back and they say, oh man, the people in the land, they're like giants and we're like grasshoppers. They're going to squish us like a bug. But there were two spies that came back and they said, we can do it. God is good. We can do it. Who do you think those two spies were that came back?
Caleb and Joshua. Okay, so Caleb has come before in chapter 14 to say where he wanted, what land he wanted. And so now we're going to go to verse 13 and we're going to start reading with that in the background. So we're going to talk about Caleb, how he gets a city, and then the rest of the chapter as well. A bunch of cities in Judah. Here we go.
Do you want to read that part? So now, to Caleb, the son of Jonah, he have a share among the children of Jerusalem. According to the commandment, commandment of the Lord to Joshua and Elah, namely, oh this is a hard one, Kirjoth Arba, which is Hebron. Arba was the father of Anak. Good. You want to keep reading? Yeah, come on, here you go. Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from there, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Ptolemy, the children of Anak. Then He went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir. Formerly, the name of Debir was Kirjathsefir. Good job.
And Caleb said, he who attacks Kirjathsefir and takes it, to him I will give Aksah, my daughter. as a wife. So Atheniel, the son of Canaaz, the brother of Caleb, took it, and he gave him Axa, his daughter, as wife. Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, What do you wish? She answered, give me a blessing since you have given me land in the south give me also springs of water so he gave for the upper springs and the lower springs all right so we got three different questions we need to ask ourselves from this section a what is this about b what's the Best verse to summarize and see what are we called to do.
So Caleb, the son of Daphna, he gave a share among the children of Judah according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, namely Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron, right? So Hebron is a city, right? Now, the Kiriath Arba, Arba was named after, after, the father of Anak, the Anakim, the giants. So what did Caleb do to the three sons of Anak?
I don't know. Well, verse 14. Look at verse 14. Right over here. So what did Caleb do Well, these are the Giants Shoo-shoo weren't these the ones that the people were afraid of yep, what does Caleb do? That's right. That's right. Caleb drove out the three sons of a knock and the children of a knock and Right? And then he went up from there to the inhabitants of Dabir. Right? And Dabir was also named Kirjaz Sefir. And what does he say about Kirjaz Sefir with his daughter? He says, whoever will take the city, Kirjaz Sefir, I'll give them my daughter. And so what happens?
Not Joseph so off kneel Off kneel the son of Canaz the brother of Caleb took it right So there's a family member who rises up like the knight in shining armor He says all take it and he defeats the city and after he defeats the city. Oh happens Yeah, so he gets the girl right something made out of like some type of of Novel, maybe although the kind of marrying your uncle part possibly that's a little weird. Yeah, that's odd But his daughter, what does she say to her daddy to kill it by the way daughter here?
He's 85 She's probably in her like 30s or 40 something like that maybe So I want some. Yeah, so she springs. Yeah, right. You've given me some land. So now give me some water. Right? What good? What good is a farm without a spring? And so what does Caleb do? Is he like, No, no, no, girl, just go home.
Yeah, there's some some Springs also the upper Springs and the lower Springs good So that's what this is about right this about Caleb taking the land it does about him defeating the Giants even even people like off Neil rising to the occasion and Taking over the land all right now Now Caleb is of the tribe of Judah, and so I do want to read this next part real quick. Okay, I'm going to read it because there's a ton of city names, but these are the cities of Judah. So here we go, verse 20. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.
Now this is gonna sound like if I was just reading a map full of city names. So I'm gonna read them fast. I'll probably mispronounce a bunch. That's okay, just keep along. Ready? Starting at verse 21. The city's at the limits of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom in the south. I'm gonna pull up a map here actually. So we're talking about this area, this area in Judah. Okay, you see it? Kind of the orangish area. All right, here we go.
The cities toward the border of Edom in the south were Kebzil, Eder, Jargu, Jagur, Kena, Dimona, Adada, Kedesh, Hazor, Etnan, Zif, Telim, Biloth, Hazor, Hadath, Kirioth, Hezron, which is Hazor, Amom, Shema, Molda, Hazor Gada, Heshmon, Beth Pellet, Hazorsul, Bersheba, Bizjothja, Bala, Ijim, Ezim, Eltolad, Chesil, Horma, Ziklag, Madmana, Sanasana, Lebaoth, Shilhin, Ein, and Rimmon. All the cities are 29 and their villages. So that's down in the south. In the low land, this is... What's the orange part? The orange part is this whole land allotted. No, I mean like the thing in the middle. Oh, that's the tribe of Simeon. We'll get there later. Okay, so now verse 33. Here we go.
In the low land, that's like the foothills, Eshto'ol, Zora, Ashna, Zona'a, In Ganim, Tapua, Enam, Jarmuth, Adulam, Soko, Aska, Shaharim, Adithayim, Gedara, and Gedarothim, fourteen cities with their villages. Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal, Gad, Delin, Mizpah, Jokthil, Lakish, Bozkah, Eglon, verse 40. 16 cities with their villages. Alright, we're not done yet. Verse 42. 9 cities and their villages.
Verse 45. Ekron with its towns and villages from Ekron to the sea all that lay near Ashdod with their villages Ashdod with its towns and villages Gaza with its towns and villages as far as the brook of Egypt and the great sea with its coastline notice Beth Dagon Ashdod Ekron those are cities of the Philistines those are cities over here and God says those these cities This area are also the Israelites to specifically the tribe of Judah. All right, so now first 48, right?
So here we go. We're 48. We're almost done and in the mountain country So the mountain country is going to be like in this area. So there's a mountain range that goes up in this area Well Simeon's kind of down near the lowlands area so they Yes, they go kind of around Simeon. Simeon is within Judah. Is that the Promised Land? Yep, this is the Promised Land. Then what are they going to do to Simeon? Well, Simeon will get his land. We'll read about that later. Okay, verse 48.
And in the mountain country, Shamir, Jatir, Soho, Dana, Kirtjasana, which is Dabir, Anab, Eshtemoth, Anim, Goshen, Holon, and Gilo. Eleven cities with their villages. Arab, sorry, Arab, Duma, Eshion, Jonum, Beth Tupua, Afeka, Hamath, Kirijoth Arba, which is Hebron. And what's up there? And Zior, nine cities with their villages.
What's up where? On the top. Up in this area? Yeah. Those are other people. So we'll talk about their lands in a little bit. So Benjamin, Dan, Ephraim, Manasseh, Ithacar, Zebulun. So that's just the same color. Oh, you're talking about up here, so this is the land of Naphtali, yeah, so that's the same color but a different tribe. Yeah, good questions. Okay, here we go, verse 55.
Moen, Carmel, Ziph, Zjuta, Jezreel, Jokdim, Zanoah, Cain, Gibeah, and Temna, ten cities with their villages. I'll hold Bethzor, Ghidor, Marath, Beth'anoth, and Elcton Altec on there we go six cities with their villages Kirjath ball, which is Kyrgyz Jarin and Rabaa two cities with their villages in the wilderness Beth Arba Medin Sakaa Nibshan and the city of salt and in Gedi six cities with their villages as for the Jebusites the inhabitants Dead Sea Right to the border of the Dead Sea. Yeah The sea of Galilee No, they do not border all the way up to this. Oh, no. No, you're seeing the land of Benjamin That looks like a sea, but that's a that's a different land. Yeah Okay, as for the Jebusites the Jebusites are right here. I wonder if we can zoom in here. Let's see.
Oh Here's Jerusalem right the Jebusites So it's going to talk about that in verse 63 as for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem the city of Judah The children of Judah could not drive them out that the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day interesting Jerusalem would become the capital city of Judah but for now They can't break the Jebusites. Who's the Jebusites? The Jebusites were Canaanite people who lived there. So that's kind of a different land of Judah.
So you got it in your brain? Nope. Okay, so what do you think this whole section was about? Them taking the palm stands? I'm taking the what the promising land. Yeah, so they took the promised land. Yeah, so God gives them all these cities some of them though Is it honest that they couldn't get them? Yeah, yeah, it would be a long road to try to fight and to get the cities, right?
So what's this calling us to do? Well, I think this calls us, right? God's given us work to do, so we do it, right? But beyond that, not just a moralistic thing. There's school to do too. Yeah, there's school to do, right? Get our school done, right? But here's the big thing, right?
God had made a promise to to Judah, Daddy, Jacob, that he was going to give them this whole land. And have a giant farm. A giant... Yeah, and now what has God done? He had this giant thing, bescrayed the capital. Yeah, so now they have. Our God is good to His promises. Can we trust His promises to us? Yep. Yep. Alright, let's pray. So if He said He would give me a billion kajillion dollars, He would. Yeah, but has He promised you a kajillion bajillion dollars? Nope. But has He promised you an inheritance in heaven?
Yep. Yep. So can we take that promise to the bank? Nope. Oh yeah, as long as we trust in Him. That's a phrase. I'm not meaning literally take it to the bank. He will be just as rip up the gold from the streets. No, we're not going to be. I don't think we're going to be ripping up the gold bars that line or the pavement on the streets of heaven. You're right. I think we're going to be more interested in the Lamb who's sitting on the throne than the pavement.
So let's go ahead and pray. God, we thank you so much that your promises are true. We thank you for giving us the lion of the tribe of Judah, who defeated someone and something far greater than the giants, the Anakim. Lord, you gave us our Othniel, you gave us our Caleb, you gave us our Joshua, Jesus Christ, who defeated sin and death and the devil. In Jesus' name we pray, amen. Well, may the Lord bless you.
