God’s Commands for Our Lives

Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We are at Deuteronomy chapter 4 the first 14 verses so good to be with you. We're gonna look at Moses's instructions as he and it gets into the heart of Deuteronomy. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word Coffee no numbers. Nope Deuteronomy chapter 4 verse Oh, this is a fairly long one. Nope, it's not too bad. Deuteronomy 4, 1 through 14. Do you want to start or would you like me to start? I could start. Okay, go ahead.
Now always you will listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe that you may live and go and possess the land you Possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you. You shall not add to the Lord which I commanded you, nor take from it what you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God, which I commanded you. Your eyes have seen what the what the Lord did at Baal, Peor, the Lord your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal, Baal, Baal, Baal of Peor, of Peor, but you who held fast to the Lord, you, Lord your God are alive today. Every one of you Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should act according to them in the land which you go to possess.
Therefore, be careful to understanding. To observe them. Be careful to observe them. Is that what you're saying? Therefore, be careful to observe them. But this is your wisdom and your understanding. The sight of the people who will hear all these statutes, they fully discrimination is a wise and understanding people. OK, this is one of my favorite parts of the Bible.
Ready? For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us? For whatever reason can we, or for whatever reason we may call upon Him? And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?
Only take heed to yourselves. And diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, unless they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb. When the Lord said to me, gather the people to me, and I will let them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth. and that they may teach their children. You want to finish the last paragraph or you want me to? Which is the last? Verse 11 to 14. Uh, you can do it. Okay.
Then you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain and the mountain burned with fire through the midst of heaven with darkness, cloud and thick darkness. And the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form. You only heard a voice.
So he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, the 10 commandments. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone. And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you may observe them in the land which you cross over. to possess.
Well, we have three questions to ask ourselves. A. What is this about? Good.
B. What is this? The. Backs for us to summarize. And C. What are we called to do? Good. So what do you think this passage is about? You got to tell Grandma in one sentence, maybe two sentences. What's this about? I think it's about God, Moses telling the people that they could, they will be a great nation if they keep God's command. Good. Right? Yeah. So Moses is telling the people, right? I received the commandments from the Lord. I gave those commands to you. Don't add to them. Don't take away from them. Don't forget.
This is why this is one of my favorite parts, right? Don't forget the amazing God you have. Don't forget how near he is to us. What other nation has any God like this? I know. Remember the day that you went to Mount Sinai. Remember the fire. Remember the cloud. Remember the smoke. Remember God speaking to you himself. Don't forget this. Don't let your heart grow cold. Teach it to your kids. Give it to your grandkids. I mean, this is one of the coolest passages. I just love those rhetorical questions. For what great nation is there that has God so near to it? As the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon him.
Isn't that cool? We have a God that if you have a problem, even if you're doing your English schoolwork, or you got a problem with your brother or sister, is God too busy to deal with you? Nope. No, right? We're able to call upon Him for any reason. And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in His law, which I have set before you this day? We have an amazing God who's given us the Ten Commandments, right? And they're perfect.
Only take heed, right? What do you think he means by that? Take heed. Take heed to yourself. He's giving them, like he's saying, like good things will happen. Now you should be warned. Yeah, watch out for yourself, right? Watch out lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. It's amazing.
We have this amazing God and amazing law, but what are we prone to do? use it in a bad way, or sometimes we forget what he's really like. And sometimes we even forget what he has said. Right. So this is Moses encouraging the people, guys, you got to remember this. Teach it to your kids. Teach it to your grandkids. Don't forget it yourself.
Right. Because I think he knew what the Israelite heart roots were like. But I'm not like that. Right. I'd never forget. Oh, maybe that's our... What do you think you're calling us then? That we should follow God's commands. Okay. and remember that he is God and that he's so powerful. Yeah, right.
So I think this is one of the beautiful things why the book of Hebrews, we're going to get into the Hebrews after Deuteronomy, right? But do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together as is the habit of some, or as is the manner of some, right? But provoking each other towards love and good deeds. And so much the more as you see the day growing nearer, We need to remember and encourage each other.

You can pray. OK, Lord, we thank you so much for this day. What a wonderful God you are. We thank you for the blessing. It is that you are near to us and that you have promised us your spirit and that you are available. Father, you've given us your word. Lord, we pray that we follow after you and love you all of our lives in Jesus's name. Amen. May God bless you. May you not forget the Lord. May you remember who he is. Remember all his goodness.
