Day of Atonement

Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions today. We're gonna look at Numbers chapter 29 verses 7 through 11 the day of atonement I know so we're gonna look at the day of atonement. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word I think she wants some coffee just one sip not a whole bunch Okay, that's enough that's enough All right, let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day, and we thank you for your word. God, we pray that you would please help us to understand your word. We thank you for the blessing it is that we get to read it in Jesus' name. Amen.
All right, Numbers chapter 29, verses 7 through 11, the day of atonement. On the 10th day of this seventh month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls. You shall not do any work. You shall present a burnt offering to the Lord as a sweet aroma.
One young bull, one ram, and seven lambs. Note their first year. Be sure they are without blemish. Their grain offering shall be a fine flour mix, mixed with oil. 3 tenths of an ephah for the bull, 2 tenths for the one lamb, and 1 tenth for each of the seven lambs. Also, one kid of the goats has a sin offering, besides the sin offering for atonement, the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
Okay, so we got three questions to ask ourselves. A, what is this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize? And C, what are we called to do? All right. So what do you think this is about? Put in your words in one sentence. That's fine. Okay, so the offerings on the atonement day? Yeah, that'd be fine. What are some things that stood out to you in that?
Okay, so it's not just one single thing, is it? It's like ten-fifths of this animal, like ten-fifths of that offering and some of this offering. Yeah, so there's different parts of this offering, right? There is one atonement offering, right? But there's also a sin offering, and there's a grain offering, and there's a drink offering, right? I bet there's a yeah, there's a burnt offering.
Right. So there's all these different offerings. But this is the the the. One like five super high holy convocation day. Now, interestingly, what were they supposed to do to themselves? You should put your soul. What do you think that means? You shall afflict your souls. Not do it anymore. Mmm, I've never thought about it that way before. What do you think Ellie? What do you think? Afflict yourself.
What do you think afflicting means? That's not what afflicting means So if I afflict you it might look like punishing you or beating you down or beating you up Yeah, like like I'm gonna beat you up Right. Why do you think God would tell them that they need to afflict like.
Beat up their own hearts, their own souls. Why do you think they would need to do that on the day of atonement? It seems more to me like beating up a soul instead of. Almost like. thinking about the soul, trying to wrestle with the soul. Wrestling with your soul is good, right? Is the Day of Atonement the type of day that you should come and be like, I was glad to hear them sing. Are you singing in a major key and smiling as you're like, I'm going to make the Atonement sacrifice?
No. This is a serious thing. Yeah. And then what does this mean? Yeah. And what was the whole point of this, this specific sacrifice? Yeah. So atonement is right. The covering over of sin with blood. Right. And so why did this sacrifice even have to be made? Because that's what caused the sin. Exactly right.
But it was their sins that caused it. And so they need to take it seriously, like, man, I'm the one who broke God's law. I'm the one who transgressed his commandments. I'm the one who has hurt my covenant king. He's made a way for me to be right with him.
Now, here's the thing. Do you think the blood of bulls and goats could ever actually take away sin? No. No. Nope, that's what the book of Hebrews says, but whose blood do you think this was actually pointing to? Jesus is blood. That's right. That's what this was eventually point to. Right. Jesus is our Passover lamb. He is. He is our atonement sacrifice. Yeah.
OK, so let's do B. What's the best verse? Maybe you said. Yeah, I like verse 7 too. What do you think, or let's wrap this up with C, calling. What are we called to do? Or do you see a covenant connection or is there something that points you to Christ? This kind of reminds me of when we do communion. How so?
Because We're basically doing the same thing, but instead of making a sacrifice with lambs, we're pointing to Jesus being our sacrifice. Oh, so every time we come to the Lord's Supper, we have a sacrifice. Jesus is sacrificed again? No, we're remembering his sacrifice. Oh, we do it in remembrance of him? So it's just nothing but remembering him. There's no spiritual reality of Jesus being there? No Is Jesus there spiritually? Yeah. Yeah. Oh interesting Okay.
Yeah, I think it is too right except I think Instead of afflicting our souls we can both have afflicting and it's a means of grace, right? We should wrestle with our souls and take it seriously and yet at the same time When we taste that bread and we drink that wine, right? We'll go man. The Lord is good Yeah Well, it's not apple juice. Yep grape juice or wine the fruit of the vine Yeah, so yeah, I think that's a good good connection.
Yeah, so let's go ahead and pray you guys ready? All right Lord, we thank you so much for giving us, in the book of Numbers, this type, this shadow of what would happen with Jesus. Lord, we pray that we would look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our salvation, and that when we take the Lord's Supper, that we would come having wrestled with our souls, understanding the body of Christ, discerning his body and blood, but also, Lord, knowing that the price of our redemption has been paid. And so, Father, we pray that you would fill us with joy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
