Blessings in Obedience

You done stretching there? Good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotion. This morning we're at Deuteronomy chapter 28 verses 1 through 14. We're going to be talking about the blessings of obedience. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's word.
It's a little cold. I'm sure you can handle it. Okay, stop, stop, stop. You're even dribbling down on yourself. Man, you little... Man, you coffee fiend. Does that have caffeine? A little bit. Alright, deuteronomy. You can't even taste caffeine. Deuteronomy 28. No, you can't. It's flavorless. Yes. We're going to read from here to here. Deuteronomy 28 verses 1 through 14.
Let's pray. God, thank you so much for the time that we have to spend together now. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the blessing it is to get to follow after you. We pray that you would please help us as we read your word, that we would understand it, that you would Help us know how it applies to our lives, in Jesus's name, amen. Deuteronomy chapter 28. Daniel, I'm going to have you read verse three, here we go.
Now it came to pass, now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all his commandments, which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God. That's right. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground, and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle, and the offspring of your flocks.
You can read verse 5. Blessed shall be your basket. That's a hard one. It's cut starts with a K. Kneading bowl. Why don't you read the next one? You'd be good. Bless shall you be when you come into. When you come in. And bless shall you be when you go out.
The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated because before your face they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. Can you read verse 8? The Lord will command to bless us. The Lord will command the blessing. Why don't you put your finger on it while you read. The Lord will command the blessing. And. On. He will. No, no. The Lord will command the blessing on you. In. Store. In your storehouses. And which the Lord your God.
No. and in all to which you set your hand, and he will bless you in the land which the Lord your God has given you. The Lord will establish you as a holy people to himself just as he has sworn to you. If you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways, then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods in the fruit of your body and the increase of your livestock and in the produce of your ground and the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give you the rain on your land in your seasons. and to bless all the work of your hand.
You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall be above only and not be beneath. If you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them."
All right, so we got three questions. A, what is this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize? And C, what are we Not called to do. All right. I don't like that. Why don't we actually do it right? What are we called to do? All right. All right. So what do you think this is a about? God will not forsake you. I don't I don't remember reading that. What do you mean by that? That he will not forgive you soon. Oh, that's what you meant by that.
Yeah. So if they kept his law, he would bless them. Yeah. He would bless them. Right. So he would bless their fields, give them rain, give them food, give them livestock and homes. Right. If they kept his laws, he would do those things for him, for them. Adam and Eve didn't. Oh, yeah. Adam and Eve didn't. But God had made all these good promises to them.
What do you think would have been good for them to do? not to listen to the serpent. Well yeah, but I'm talking about the people in Israel right now. They're about to go into the promised land. They will take the promised land and it would have been good for them to listen to God because God would do what? He would bless them, right? He would bless them. Is he going to hold back good things from them that they should have? No. No, right? Guess what? Verse 14.
So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day to the right hand or to the left to go after other gods to serve them. Because if they're not keeping God's commands, what might they be tempted to do? Go serve other gods. Guess what the Jewish people did? Yeah, they wouldn't serve other gods. Daddy and my devotions are reading through Jeremiah right now. And time and time and time again, the charge against God's people is they forsook the Lord and they wouldn't serve other gods. Why did they do that? Why do you sin?
I don't know. Has God told you that you're supposed to honor your mommy and daddy? Let's not touch that. Yep. And you do that perfectly every day, right? No! God's told you to love your brothers and sisters, right? You love your neighbor as yourself. And you never get in any fights, do you? No, I never get in. And, you know, at the end of the day, we're not even though God holds out all these blessings. Right.
God tells daddy to love Jesus or love my wife as Jesus loves the church. And do I love mommy perfectly? Sometimes do I get impatient? Mm hmm. Is that loving? God tells me to not exasperate you guys, right, not provoke you to wrath, but sometimes in my impatient and not gentle. Most times, ouch, indictment, you cause me emotional damage. But the point is, right, like.
Why do we sin, even though we know that there's blessings in following God's law? Oh, no. I think it's because I think it's because we're children of Adam and Eve. We still have sinful hearts. Let's wrap this up here, OK, please. we're children of Adam and Eve, we still have sinful hearts. And so we need the Holy Spirit to turn us more and more away from our sin, to see the sinfulness of it, to hate that sin, and to love Jesus more.
I think that's what we're called to do. There's blessings in obedience, isn't there? Oh yeah, there's a lot of blessings. So you're ready to pray? I think you're tired. Maybe you need to go take a nap. No, it's the middle of the school day. Let's pray. Let's pray. God, we thank you so much for Jesus Christ.
Lord, we know that there is great blessing and following in your ways. But Father, we confess to you that sometimes we don't even know why we sin. We often don't check our hearts. We often just get busy doing our own things rather than following after you.
Please, God, forgive us. Forgive us for following the idols of our hearts. Turn us from our sin and let us love you. Let us love Jesus. Please, Lord, let us abide in him. Repent of sin and bear much good fruit. In keeping with that repentance in Jesus's name, amen. All right, Dana says bye. Bye. Don't yell into the microphone. I've told you not to do that.
